What Is ARPU? Average Revenue Per User Explained
ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) is the average monthly revenue generated per active customer. It tells you how much each customer is worth on average and is a key indicator of pricing power, upsell success, and customer mix quality. Rising ARPU means your existing customers are spending more — whether through upgrades, additional seats, or price increases.
Quick Answer
ARPU = Total MRR ÷ Active Customers
Example: $41,580 MRR ÷ 420 customers = $99 ARPU
Why ARPU Matters
ARPU is a leading indicator of business health. A rising ARPU signals successful upselling and pricing power. A falling ARPU may indicate you are acquiring lower-value customers, customers are downgrading, or you have a pricing problem. ARPU also directly impacts LTV and CAC payback — higher ARPU means each customer generates more value and pays back their acquisition cost faster.
Investors look at ARPU trends to assess whether a SaaS business is moving upmarket (higher ARPU) or downmarket (lower ARPU). The direction of ARPU movement often matters more than the absolute number.
How to Calculate ARPU
ARPU Formula
ARPU = Total MRR ÷ Active Customers
Example: Your MRR is $41,580 and you have 420 active paying customers. ARPU = $41,580 ÷ 420 = $99 per customer per month.
For multi-tier pricing, ARPU gives you the blended average. To understand the distribution, track ARPU per cohort or per pricing tier separately.
ARPU Benchmarks by Segment
| Segment | Typical ARPU | Sales Motion |
|---|---|---|
| Self-serve SMB | $10–$50/mo | Product-led, no sales team |
| Mid-market | $100–$500/mo | Inside sales, light touch |
| Enterprise | $1,000+/mo | Field sales, dedicated AE |
There is no universal "good" ARPU — what matters is whether ARPU is rising or falling over time, and whether it is high enough to make your CAC payback economically viable. A $20 ARPU business can be highly profitable if CAC is $100 (5-month payback); a $500 ARPU business can struggle if CAC is $10,000 (20-month payback).
How to Increase ARPU
- Raise prices. A 10% price increase directly flows to ARPU. Most SaaS companies underprice because they fear churn, but price increases rarely cause significant churn if value has been added.
- Drive expansion revenue. Offer add-ons, premium tiers, and seat-based pricing to encourage existing customers to spend more over time.
- Move upmarket. Shift your customer acquisition toward higher-value segments. Enterprise customers cost more to acquire but generate dramatically more revenue.
- Implement usage-based pricing. Charge based on consumption (API calls, storage, seats) so revenue scales naturally with customer growth.
- Bundling and tiering. Create mid-tier plans that capture customers who want more than basic but are not ready for premium.
ARPU and LTV: The Connection
ARPU is a direct input to LTV (Customer Lifetime Value). The formula is LTV = (ARPU × Gross Margin) ÷ Monthly Churn Rate. A $10 increase in ARPU with 80% gross margin and 4% monthly churn increases LTV by $200. This is why even small ARPU improvements have outsized effects on unit economics.
Common ARPU Mistakes
Common Mistake
Including free trial or freemium users in the customer count. ARPU should only divide by paying customers. Including non-paying users artificially deflates ARPU and hides the true revenue per paying customer.
